The FIFA World Cup 2022, Qatar is just around the corner. The biggest football carnival on the planet is set to open its curtain on 21st November and wrap up with the Final on 18th December. It will be the first ever World Cup in a Middle Eastern country.
Qatar is a country which is well known for its Islamic laws and we will see its effects in the tournament. According to the Islamic laws of Qatar, homosexuality is an illegal activity, strickly prohibited, and punishable crime. The laws enforce up to 3 years in prison and even death penalty in some cases for homosexuality.
As there are many LGBTQ+ fans around the world who wish to visit Qatar for the biggest football tournament, there are some concerns about the conflicting cultures.
The LGBTQ community is one of the most oppressed around the world. They want to raise their voice and make a statement in front of the bigger stages. It would be a golden opportunity for them to showdown with LGBTQ flags in a Middle Eastern Islamic country. But can they wave LGBTQ flags in Qatar in the FIFA World Cup 2022?
We already know thay there will be no extramarital sexual affair allowed in Qatar for the World Cup fans. The ruling body clearly stated that one-night stands will be completely out of the menu. It can be punishable for up to 7 years.
The Daily Star quoted from a police source, “sex is very much off the menu, unless you are coming as a married couple. There definitely will be no one-night stands at this tournament.”
News also popped up that there will be 11-years of prison sentence for LGBTQ activity in the World Cup in Qatar. However, the news appears to be fake as there is no official evidence backing the news.
FIFA is constantly working with the Qatari ruling body to ease the situation for all the fans. As things stand, you can wave LGBTQ flags inside the stadium during world cup matches. But you cannot be involved with LGBTQ activities in public places. One must comply with the Islamic laws while in Qatar and respect the country’s culture and custom.
Hence, Fans can wave LGBTQ flags inside the stadiums during the world cup matches. And they must care to respect the laws of a nation. However, things can get chaotic if the homosexuals involve in public showdown.
