FIFA will allow 26-player squads

FIFA will allow 26-player squads in the World Cup 2022, according to a statement given by FIFA on Thursday. There have been 23-player squads since the 2002 Korea Japan World Cup. Now we will see a larger squad for each nation this November in the FIFA World Cup 2022.

“The number of players to be included on the final list has been increased to at least 23 and a maximum of 26,” FIFA said in a statement.

Apart from the 11 players on the pitch, 26 persons will be allowed to sit on the bench in a World Cup game.

“No more than 26 people (up to 15 substitutes and 11 team officials – one of these officials must be the team doctor) will be allowed to sit on the team bench.”

Moreover, up to 5 substitutes will be allowed inside the regulation time of 90 minutes. FIFA made these changes for better flexibility and tactical purposes. Moreover, a larger squad should be necessary to decrease players’ physical and mental strains in this COVID affected world.
