What is the meaning of chokers in cricket in English and why are South Africa labelled as generational chokers

Despite all their world class talent on an individual and team level, South Africa have never been able to put it all together to win the biggest trophies and their only triumph to date remains the Champions Trophy, won in 1998.

It is because of failures to get over the line, especially in the knockout stage of world events, that South Africa have been branded as ‘chokers’, a word given to a team in sports which fails to perform at the biggest stage in the most important matches.

India vs South Africa Performance

India has won their last four matches, while South Africa is also on a winning streak. In this clash of titans, the world will watch as both sides vie for the coveted title to become world champions.

India last won the ODI World Cup in 2011 under MS Dhoni’s leadership. Since then, India has faced heartbreaks in World Cups, whether in ODI or T20 formats.

The T20 World Cup final presents a golden opportunity for these two teams, who have long awaited a chance to lift an ICC trophy.

The India vs. South Africa match can be termed as a battle of chokers, with one team sure to shed that tag by the final ball.

India’s Performance

India last clinched the T20 World Cup in 2007. Despite reaching the Super Eight stage in every subsequent tournament, they have been unable to secure another title.

Since 2007, India has been eliminated from the Super Eight stage or earlier on four occasions. They faced knockout from the preliminary round in 2021, and though they reached the final in 2014, they lost to Sri Lanka.

The West Indies defeated them in the 2016 semifinals, and England knocked them out in the 2022 semifinals.

India has some ICC World Cup trophies to their name, but South Africa has consistently struggled to secure an ICC trophy.

South Africa’s Performance

The Proteas have battled the chokers tag, faltering at crucial moments in nearly every ICC tournament.

South Africa has reached the semifinals only twice before this edition, being knocked out in the Super Eight Stage on every other occasion except in 2009 and 2014.

With a dominant win over Afghanistan in the semifinals, South Africa has overcome a major hurdle but they once again failed to win the biggest match of them with the side falling against India in the final. South Africa is yet to win a cricket world cup.
