Rafael Leao was born on 10 June 1999, in Almada, Portugal. He was born to Angolan parents.
Leao is a Sporting CP youth academy product. The winger made his Sporting CP first-team debut in 2018. In the 2017-18 season, he played 3 games in the Portuguese Primeira Liga and scored three goals.
In 2018, he joined Ligue 1 club Lille as a free agent. The young winger became a regular starter for Lille from his very first season. In his only season (2018-19) with the club, Leao played in 24 games and scored 8 goals.
